Bio | Tom Garrett

Virginia Delegate Tom Garrett earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Richmond. After the University of Richmond, Tom Garrett became an artillery officer in the United States Army. Achieving the rank of Captain, Tom led soldiers overseas—most notably while deployed in Bosnia.

Upon returning to the States, Tom earned his J.D. from the University of Richmond and quickly became an Assistant Attorney General for Virginia.

In 2016, Tom was elected to represent Virginia’s 5th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. Tom won that election with the most votes ever in the 5th Congressional District. While in Congress, Tom served on the Foreign Affairs Committee, Homeland Security Committee, Education and Workforce Committee and was a member of the Freedom Caucus.

Tim Hoffman obtained a bachelor's degree in engineering at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, in 1973, completed his Master’s Degree at the University of Massachusetts and studied at Harvard University -- The Weatherhead Center for International Studies Fellowship.

After 29 years in uniform, the West Point graduate retired from the Army in 2002 as Army colonel and served as a senior executive in the U.S. Department of Defense.

His service took him to Baghdad, Iraq and his insights on America's military intervention in the Middle East are brought to the forefront in a written anthology titled “Effective Legitimate Secure” - “Insights for Defense Institution Building,” in which Colonel Hoffman wrote a chapter titled “Lessons from Iraq.”

During the program, Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy delve into the major shift in US foreign policy, specifically as it pertains to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. President Trump has authorized for Ukraine to receive US weapons in defending the nation from Russian attacks. President Trump stated that he would infuse Ukraine with US weapons which are purchased by European allies.

President Trump simultaneously issued an ultimatum to Russian President Vladimir Putin, giving him 50 days to arrange a ceasefire or face trade sanctions.

What does this change mean for America and its potential engagement with Ukraine and NATO partners? How will Russia's Putin respond? Is America's attitude toward supporting Ukraine changing, or will the concerns of isolationism remain a stumbling block?

Ambassador Gilmore served as America's top diplomat to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in President Donald Trump's first administration. His firm leadership through the Trump Administration made an impact within Europe's capital cities and its corridors of power specifically in regard to holding Russia to account.

In 2020, then-Ambassador Gilmore at a OSCE conference in Vienna, Austria, stated:

"The United States has repeatedly condemned Russia’s invasion, occupation, and purported annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula and the abuses that Russia commits there. In fact, I just finished doing that in response to their raising some trivial little error we made, but NOT an error of our policy. Today we would like to draw attention to the Russian government’s continuing conscription of individuals from Crimea into Russia’s armed forces. Compelling persons protected by the Fourth Geneva Convention to serve in the forces of a hostile power is a grave breach of the Geneva Convention, and a violation of the obligations that the Russian Federation owes under its subscription to the Geneva Convention. Once again, a violation of international norms and behavior and commitments that the Russian Federation has made and now violates."

Tom Garrett acquired his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Richmond, and began his service to our country with six years in the Army, becoming an artillery officer in the United States Army. Achieving the rank of Captain, Tom led soldiers overseas—most notably while deployed in Bosnia. Upon returning to the States, Tom earned his J.D. from the University of Richmond and quickly became an Assistant Attorney General for Virginia.

In 2016, Tom was elected to represent Virginia’s 5th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. Tom won that election with the most votes ever in the 5th Congressional District. Tom served the 5th District for two years before deciding not to seek reelection.

Bio | Victor Davis Hanson

Victor Davis Hanson is the Martin and Illie Anderson Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution; his focus is classics and military history.

Hanson was a National Endowment for the Humanities fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences, Stanford, California (1992–93), a visiting professor of classics at Stanford University (1991–92), the annual Wayne and Marcia Buske Distinguished Visiting Fellow in History at Hillsdale College (2004–), the Visiting Shifron Professor of Military History at the US Naval Academy (2002–3), and the William Simon Visiting Professor of Public Policy at Pepperdine University (2010).

In 1991 he was awarded an American Philological Association Excellence in Teaching Award. He received the Eric Breindel Award for Excellence in Opinion Journalism (2002), presented the Manhattan's Institute's Wriston Lecture (2004), and was awarded the National Humanities Medal (2007) and the Bradley Prize (2008). Hanson is the author of hundreds of articles, book reviews, and newspaper editorials on Greek, agrarian, and military history and essays on contemporary culture.

He has written or edited twenty-four books, the latest of which is The Case for Trump (Basic Books, 2019). Derrick’s journey of public service started when he joined the Navy at the age of 18 and served for 26 years, retiring as a Navy SEAL Senior Chief with 5 combat deployments and several others to troubled areas in the world. His first combat deployment was to Bosnia Herzegovina immediately following the signing of the Dayton Accords. Derrick Van Orden continued his service with multiple combat tours to Afghanistan and Iraq. Additionally, he served in the Horn of Africa, Asia, Europe, and South and Central America. Ambassador James Gilmore who served as America's top diplomat to the Organization for Security and Cooperation (OSCE) in Vienna, Austria, from 2019-2021, provides a timely and relevant analysis of the conflict impacting the European continent, and how Russia's invasion of Ukraine impacts the national security of the United States. James S. Gilmore III was appointed by President Donald Trump to be Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the Organization for Security and Cooperation (OSCE) in Vienna, Austria in 2019. He was confirmed unanimously by the U.S. Senate. As ambassador, he headed a mission devoted to the security issues of the 57 member countries, involving matters of geopolitics, arms control, economics and human rights.

Ambassador Gilmore was elected the 68th Governor of Virginia in 1997. Governor Gilmore traveled extensively on behalf of business development for Virginia, visiting sixteen countries on three continents.

He was a candidate for President of the United States in 2008 and 2016.From 1999 to 2003 Ambassador chaired the Congressional Advisory Panel to Assess Domestic Response Capabilities for Terrorism Involving Weapons of Mass Destruction, more commonly referred to as the “Gilmore Commission”. The Commission warned of the dangers of an attack on the homeland prior to the 9-11 attacks on New York and at the Pentagon, and issued two additional reports thereafter. Ambassador Gilmore was appointed Chairman of the Board of Visitors of the U.S. Air Force Academy from 2002-2005 by President George W. Bush, and was awarded the Air Force Exceptional Service Medal in 2006.

Ambassador Gilmore served in the U.S. Army from 1971-1974, and was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal for service in the Military Intelligence to a multi-national military command headquartered in West Germany.

At the conclusion of his term as Governor of Virginia, George Allen viewed with satisfaction the monumental reforms his administration achieved that made Virginia a national model in economic development, public safety, education accountability, and welfare reform.

The Washington Post called Allen “one of the most influential governors in recent Virginia history”.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch recently praised Allen’s campaign “among the most policy-driven campaigns in gubernatorial history.”

Keeping the promises he made to Virginians, and working with a Democratic-controlled General Assembly, Allen successfully cut taxes by more than $600 million; instituted high academic Standards of Learning and School Performance Report Cards; made neighborhoods safer with the abolition of parole; initiated historic, pro-work welfare reforms; enacted the nation’s first Public-Private Transportation funding system; repealed or amended 71% of all regulations; reduced the size of government with greater efficiency and accountability; and grew the economy – making sure the world knew “Virginia is Open for Business”. With added revenues, Allen was able to freeze tuition rates at universities and community colleges.

Allen’s administration recruited over $13 billion in new investments and created more than 300,000 net new private sector jobs. When Allen was sworn in as Governor in 1994, coal and cigarettes were Virginia’s top exports; after four years of Allen’s tireless dedication to economic-development, semiconductor chips became Virginia’s top export, leading U.S. News and World Report to dub Virginia the “Silicon Dominion”.

Hanke’s Annual Misery Index (HAMI). What is it — and how should we conceive of man’s well-being? The human condition lies on a vast spectrum between “miserable” and “happy.” In the economic sphere, misery tends to flow from high inflation, steep borrowing costs, and unemployment. The surefire way to mitigate that misery is through economic growth. Comparing countries’ metrics can tell us a lot about where in the world people are sad or happy. HAMI gives us the answers. My version of the misery index is the sum of the year-end unemployment, inflation, and bank-lending rates, minus the annual percentage change in real GDP per capita. Higher readings on the first three elements are “bad” and make people more miserable. Bio: Dr. Steve H. Hanke

Steve H. Hanke is a professor of applied economics and founder and codirector of the Institute for Applied Economics, Global Health, and the Study of Business Enterprise at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Dr. Steve Hanke served as special counselor to the Center for Financial Stability in New York. Hanke is also a contributing editor at Central Banking in London and a contributor at National Review. In addition, Hanke is a member of the Charter Council of the Society for Economic Measurement and of the Euromoney Country Risk’s Experts Panel.

In the past, Hanke taught economics at the Colorado School of Mines and at the University of California, Berkeley. He served as a member of the Governor’s Council of Economic Advisers in Maryland in 1976– 77, as a senior economist on President Reagan’s Council of Economic Advisers in 1981–82, and as a senior adviser to the Joint Economic Committee of the U.S. Congress in 1984–88. Hanke served as a state counselor to both the Republic of Lithuania in 1994–96 and the Republic of Montenegro in 1999–2003. He was also an adviser to the presidents of Bulgaria in 1997–2002, Venezuela in 1995–96, and Indonesia in 1998. He played an important role in establishing new currency regimes in Argentina, Estonia, Bulgaria, Bosnia‐​Herzegovina, Ecuador, Lithuania, and Montenegro. Hanke has also held senior appointments in the governments of many other countries, including Albania, Kazakhstan, the United Arab Emirates, and Yugoslavia.

Hanke has been awarded honorary doctorate degrees by the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (2003), the Free University of Tbilisi (2010), Istanbul Kültür University (2012), the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (2013), Varna Free University (2015), the Universität Liechtenstein (2017), and the D.A. Tsenov Academy of Economics (2018) in recognition of his scholarship on exchange‐​rate regimes. He is a distinguished associate of the International Atlantic Economic Society, a distinguished professor at the Universitas Pelita Harapan in Jakarta, Indonesia, a professor asociado (the highest honor awarded to international experts of acknowledged competence) at the Universidad del Azuay in Cuenca, Ecuador, and a profesor visitante at the Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (the UPC’s highest academic honor).

In 1998, he was named one of the 25 most influential people in the world by World Trade Magazine. In 2020, Hanke was named a Knight of the Order of the Flag.

Hanke is a well‐​known currency and commodity trader. Currently, he serves as chairman of the Supervisory Board of Advanced Metallurgical Group N.V. in Amsterdam and chairman emeritus of the Friedberg Mercantile Group Inc. in Toronto. During the 1990s, he served as president of Toronto Trust Argentina in Buenos Aires, the world’s best‐​performing emerging market mutual fund in 1995.

Peter Robinson is the Murdoch Distinguished Policy Fellow at the Hoover Institution, where he writes about business and politics, edits Hoover's quarterly journal, the Hoover Digest, and hosts Hoover's video series program, Uncommon Knowledge™.

Robinson spent six years in the White House, serving from 1982 to 1983 as chief speechwriter to Vice President George Bush and from 1983 to 1988 as special assistant and speechwriter to President Ronald Reagan. The conversation will begin by focusing on the 33rd anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. On November 9, 1989, five days after a major peaceful protest in East Berlin which gathered half a million people, the communist rulers gave permission for gates along the Berlin Wall to be opened. The fall of Communist Eastern Europe was hastened by the principled leadership of President Ronald Reagan joined by then-UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Pope John Paul II, Germany's Helmut Kohl, Vaclav Havel, leaders within Poland, and other countries in the Soviet block yearning for freedom.

The historic day reminded the world of a speech that was delivered on June 12, 1987 by President Ronald Reagan when he shared these words:

"_Behind me stands a wall that encircles the free sectors of this city, part of a vast system of barriers that divides the entire continent of Europe. . . . Standing before the Brandenburg Gate, every man is a German, separated from his fellow men. Every man is a Berliner, forced to look upon a scar. . . . As long as this gate is closed, as long as this scar of a wall is permitted to stand, it is not the German question alone that remains open, but the question of freedom for all mankind. . . .

General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate.

Will the Fed's interest rate hikes lead to a soft-landing or a major recession in 2023?

How Effective are Sanctions on Russia?

The discussion will also examine U.S. and European Union sanctions imposed on Russia. This past week we found out that with energy prices up, Moscow is reaping significant financial gains through the sale of oil and gas. A recent Wall Street Journal report stated that through July 2022, Moscow has totaled $97 billion from oil and gas sales, earning $5.4 billion more per month than last year's monthly average. Russia is actually pumping almost as much oil into the global market as it did before prior to the conflict with Ukraine.

US Assistance to Ukraine Rises to $60 Billion — While the European Union's Contribution Amounts to $10 Billion Only

The Biden Administration along with Democrat and Republican members of Congress have authorized over $60 billion in US taxpayer funds to support Ukraine's military and provide assistance to Europe's NATO members. However, the EU comprised of 27 member states in Europe has only provided 10 billion euros (USD$10 billion) since the beginning of the war.

As a leading world expert on currency boards, measuring and stopping hyperinflation, currency and commodity trading, Dr. Hanke will relay his thoughts on the US and Euro currencies and the currency board that he developed for a number of countries around the world.

His recent commentary in The Wall Street Journal titled "Floating Exchange Rates Add to Economic Uncertainty” raised important points. A professor of environmental health and engineering, Hanke is co-founder and co-director of the Institute for Applied Economics, Global Health, and the Study of Business Enterprise, an interdivisional Institute between the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering. The institute’s extensive research and publishing focus on applied economics and finance, business history, and public health.

Recognized globally for his expertise, Hanke advises a number of public and private institutions. He is a senior advisor at the Renmin University of China’s International Monetary Research Institute in Beijing and special counselor to the Center for Financial Stability in New York. The discussion on America's Roundtable focused on the recent economic policies coming from Washington, DC, the future of America's energy security, growing concerns of an emboldened China and rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific region, an update on Israel's efforts to root out terrorist networks in Gaza and the West Bank, also known as Judea and Samaria, and a review of President Joe Biden's visit to the Middle East.

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 claims it will help bring down inflation. However, taxpayers funds amounting to $369 billion will be spent on climate change programs over the next ten years.

According to the Penn Wharton Budget Model (PWBM), there’s low confidence that the legislation will have any impact on inflation. PWBM is a nonpartisan, research-based organization at the University of Pennsylvania that creates economic analysis of public policy’s fiscal impact.

There is also concern about the proposed legislation which would invest $80 billion in the nation’s tax agency over the next 10 years.

U.S. Senator Rick Scott issued this following statement: “Are Democrats doing anything to support border patrol as President Biden’s massive border crisis rages on? No. Instead, they want to supersize the IRS and add 87,000 more agents to hunt down and audit even more families and small businesses. It’s a disgusting misuse of taxpayer money and the last thing American families want as drugs flood their communities and they continue to feel the crushing pain of inflation and rising prices.”

Ambassador Carla Sands

As US Ambassador to Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands, Carla Sands proposed and helped establish the U.S. Consulate in Nuuk, Greenland, and assisted with resolving the Thule Base Maintenance Contract dispute. She facilitated partnership agreements between the United States and the people of Greenland and the people of the Faroe Islands and expanded the United States mission in the Kingdom of Denmark to include the United States Coast Guard.

In January 2021, Carla received the Department of Defense’s highest civilian honor, the Medal for Distinguished Public Service, for her work to increase security in the high north while countering Russia and China.

Carla Sands studied biology and chemistry at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Elizabethtown College before receiving her Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Life Chiropractic College.

Carla Sands went on to follow in her father and grandfather’s footsteps, being the third generation in her family to practice chiropractic in Pennsylvania. In 1999, Carla married the love of her life, Fred Sands. After Fred’s passing in 2015, Carla stepped in to lead his company and became the first woman to serve as Chairman & CEO of Vintage Capital Group.

The word ‘money’ doesn’t even appear in President Biden’s plan to whip inflation.

The lead paragraph of President Biden’s op-ed “My Plan for Fighting Inflation” (May 31) asserts that the global economy faces an inflation problem exacerbated by Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine, high oil prices and supply-chain problems. This line of argument shows why the president’s team and the experts at the Federal Reserve were unable to anticipate the inflation conundrum that their economic missteps have forced us into. It also shows why the president’s plan will likely fail to allow us to exit inflation with a smooth landing.

We don’t have a global inflation problem. Inflations are always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon spawned by the creation of excess money by local central banks. China, Japan and Switzerland also face elevated oil prices, supply-chain problems and fallout from the war in Ukraine, but their annual inflation rates are 2.1%, 2.5% and 2.5%, respectively. They have avoided the ravages of inflation because their central banks haven’t produced excessive quantities of money.

Adherence to the tenets of monetarism is nowhere to be found in the Biden White House or the Fed. Chairman Jerome Powell has stressed that we had to “unlearn” monetarism. It looks like Mr. Biden was an attentive student. The word “money” doesn’t even appear in his plan to whip inflation. As he said in 2020, “Milton Friedman isn’t running the show anymore.” As long as Friedman and monetarism remain canceled, the White House and the Fed will be grasping for straws.

The conversation with Senator DeMint will highlight the significance of affirming U.S. Constitutional principles and the urgency to advance pro-growth policies. Senator DeMint will present his views on the Federal Reserve's announcement on Wednesday of a 0.75-percentage-point raise of the federal-funds rate, the central bank’s largest rate hike since 1994.

Senator DeMint will also address the national security crisis and humanitarian crisis at the U.S. southern border. The discussion will place the spotlight on the goals of the Democratic Party's policies which reveal a troubling vision whereby the Department of Homeland Security is set to punish Border Patrol agents while refusing to uphold a rule of law based immigration system and shore up national security at the borders.

Update: 50 Illegal immigrants on the terror list were apprehended at the border by Customs and Border Protection in 2022 thus far. This figure is more than the total number caught in the last five years combined.

The dangerous activities of transnational organized crime networks at the border include human trafficking and smuggling of drugs such as fentanyl. The New York Times reported, "...deaths from drug overdoses rose again to record-breaking levels in 2021, nearing 108,000, the result of an ever-worsening fentanyl crisis, according to preliminary new data published on Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."

The program will cover Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the brutal warfare resulting in 1,000 casualties per day in the Donbas region, and the significance of affirming America's long-standing policy of peace through strength. Iran is dangerously close to completing its nuclear weapons program.

Senator Jim DeMint has fought tirelessly for freedom, prosperity, and traditional American values against the Washington swamp for over two decades. Today, he leads and trains a new generation of conservative warriors as Chairman of the Conservative Partnership Institute.

DeMint represented South Carolina in the U.S. House (1999-2005) and U.S. Senate (2005-2013). But if she has no position on natural rights, as she wrote in response to Senator Cruz, then she has no position on the Declaration of Independence. Her answers did not come under the pressured circumstances of live hearings, but instead came as written answers to written questions after the end of her Judiciary Committee hearings. We should view them not as a mistake, but as her carefully considered views on the matter. Biography: John Yoo

John Yoo is the Emanuel Heller Professor of Law at the University of California at Berkeley. He is also a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, and a Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University.

His tenth book, Defender-in-Chief: Trump’s Fight for Presidential Power, was published by St. Martin’s Press in 2020. Professor Yoo’s other books include Striking Power: How Cyber, Robots, and Space Weapons Change the Rules for War, Point of Attack: Preventive War, International Law, and Global Welfare, and Crisis and Command: A History of Executive Power from George Washington to George Bush.

Professor Yoo has published more than 100 articles in academic journals on subjects including national security, constitutional law, international law, and the Supreme Court. He also regularly contributes to the editorial pages of the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and National Review, among others.

Professor Yoo has served in all three branches of government. He was an official in the U.S. Department of Justice, where he worked on national security and terrorism issues after the 9/11 attacks. As the Biden administration pushes for an Iran nuclear deal in Vienna, the discussion will also highlight the fact that an agreement with the state sponsor of terrorism will give Tehran access to some $100 billion in frozen funds. As a member of Congress, Thomas Garrett served on the Committees on Homeland Security, Foreign Affairs, and Education and Workforce. He was a senator and assistant attorney general representing the Commonwealth of Virginia. Garrett served in the U.S. Army and was based in the Balkans during the 1990s.

As America's top diplomat to Denmark, a NATO and European Union member state, Ambassador Sands was instrumental in blocking the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline running under the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany. During Ambassador Sands tenure, Denmark increased its defense spending, while U.S. exports to the Kingdom of Denmark rose over 43%, resulting in the creation of additional jobs right here at home.

According to Reuters: "Over 2 million refugees have entered Poland from Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion on Feb. 24, the Polish border guard said on Friday." Estimates from Europe suggest that the numbers will rise to more than 5 million Ukrainians fleeing their homes in the coming weeks.

His administration worked to improve career-technical training programs and their delivery through Mississippi’s top-rated community and junior college system, pairing program offerings with local workforce opportunities and collaborating with the K-12 system to strengthen high school vocational programs.

He worked closely with the University of Mississippi Medical Center to build a new School of Medicine and to increase the number of graduating physicians each year; to position Mississippi as a national leader in telemedicine services and technology; and to create a state-of-the-art residential facility to care for medically fragile children.

In 2014, on behalf of the FBI, Debra LaPrevotte landed in Kyiv, Ukraine, to begin a high-level investigation focusing on the pro-Putin regime's elite including the ousted Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych who had just fled to Moscow. The pro-Russian regime's elite robbed the Ukrainian treasury of $40 billion according to expert estimates, thus weakening the sovereign state of Ukraine making it an easy target for Putin's Russia to annex the Crimean peninsula and arming separatists in the Donbas region leading to deaths of 14,000 Ukrainians during the period of April 2014 - May 2021.

Debra retired after 20 years with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). She served as a Supervisory Special Agent on the International Corruption Unit at FBI Headquarters in Washington D.C. Debra was instrumental in initiating the FBI’s Kleptocracy program and seized more than $1 billion dollars from foreign corrupt officials.

Debra has spent the past 14 years working international corruption investigations. She is also a Forensic Scientist and spent several years on the FBI’s Evidence Response Team Unit at the FBI Lab. Prior to her FBI career, Debra worked for the Department of Defense for five years. Debra has an undergraduate degree from George Mason University and a masters degree in Forensic Science from George Washington University.

Rainer Saks, a former chief of the Estonian foreign intelligence and a former chief of staff of the Estonian foreign ministry, said the Russian leadership thinks the Western countries are weak and therefore Russia hopes it will end Ukraine’s Western integration.

“The way Russia operates towards Ukraine comes from the fact that it regards the Western reactions essentially non-existent,” Saks said on a radio programme called “Vikerhommik”. “Russia thinks it can act and it regards the Western countries as weak. And the question is not whether the Western states actually are weak, the question is how Russia sees them.”

He said it was a paradox of a historical window that Russia’s leadership has defined the current time window as the ending of Ukraine’s integration towards the West. “And I’m not talking about stopping it, but finishing. Ending forever. That’s why this is happening.” Saks also noted on the Estonian Public Broadcasting radio programme that if the Western countries impose sanctions on Russia, then the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, is prepared to strategically suffer through them.

From 2001 through 2006 he served as the deputy coordination director at the coordination unit of the Government Office. From 2006 to 2011 Saks headed the Office of the President, while simultaneously heading the council of the International Center for Defense and Security (from 2007-2011). From 2011 Rainer Saks held the office of the Director General of the Information Board.
