Biography | Dr. Ben Carson

In 1973, Ben Carson graduated from Yale University. He went on to receive his M.D. from the University of Michigan Medical School. At the age of 33, Dr. Carson became the chief of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, making him the youngest major division director in the hospital’s history.

This would be among an extensive list of outstanding firsts for Dr. Carson. Dr. Carson’s accomplishments have earned him a place in medical history. He performed the first and only successful separation of craniopagus (Siamese) twins joined at the back of the head in 1987.

He also performed the first fully successful separation of type-2 vertical craniopagus twins in 1997 in South Africa. In his career, Dr. Carson became a professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery, and pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and directed pediatric neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center for over 29 years.

In 2016, Dr. Carson accepted the position of Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under the Trump administration. After completing his tenure as the 17th Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development in 2021, Dr. Carson founded the American Cornerstone Institute. This organization is focused on fighting for the principles that have guided him through life and that make this country great: faith, liberty, community and life.

Dr. Carson and his wife, Candy Carson, co-founded the Carson Scholars Fund, which recognizes young people of all backgrounds for exceptional academic and humanitarian accomplishments. The organization has awarded more than 11,000 scholarships and paid out more than $8.9 million in scholarships. The Carson Scholars Fund is currently operating in 50 states and the District of Columbia, and since its founding, has installed more than 270 Ben Carson Reading Rooms around the country.

In 2021, Dr. Carson founded the American Cornerstone Institute (ACI), a conservative think tank centered around advancing policies that promote “faith, liberty, community, and life.”

Dr. and Mrs. Carson reside in Florida. They are the proud parents of three sons and three daughters-in-law, and blessed grandparents of eight grandchildren.

The reforms began in 2012 under then-Governor Phil Bryant (R), Lt. Governor Tate Reeves (R) and Speaker Philip Gunn (R).

As previously noted by Laurie Todd-Smith in a 2023 Magnolia Tribune column on the making of the “Mississippi Miracle,” only 33 percent of third graders and 32 percent of 8th graders were reading proficiently on state tests that year. She led the governor’s education policy team and is now the Assistant Secretary for Early Childhood Education at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Bryant presented lawmakers with an education vision titled “Framing Mississippi’s Future” and in 2013, reforms such as the Literacy Based Promotion Act (3rd Grade Reading Gate), the Pre-K Collaborative, the Mississippi Charter School Act, Dyslexia Education Scholarships, and more were passed and signed into law.

Mississippi unites with Israel at Jerusalem Leaders Summit

Jerusalem | Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant bounded on stage and, in his obvious Southern drawl, greeted the guests of the Jerusalem Leaders Summit, which took place last month at the Inbal hotel.

Bryant was presented with the Distinguished Leadership Award for his efforts to strengthen the Israel-U.S. strategic partnership. He is a strong Israel advocate and his emotions were on full display when he addressed the crowd.

“We have so many friends around the world,” he said, “but none as close, and none that I love more than Israel. I am called to be here. Perhaps sometimes we cannot explain exactly why, but that call, that voice, is stronger than any other that we hear, to come to Israel, to Jerusalem, to do what I can to strengthen this relationship.”

The Third Jerusalem Leaders Summit held from Nov. 18-20, proved a unique event featuring leading voices who articulated principled solutions in addressing the 21st-century’s economic concerns, global threats and security challenges.

The parent organization—the International Leaders Summit, co-founded by Joel Anand Samy and Natasha Srdoc—brought together leaders from America, Britain, continental Europe, India and Israel to its inaugural Jerusalem Leaders Summit event in 2015, affirming the rule of law of civilization, based on shared principles and values.

In his new book Plan Red: China's Project to Destroy America, Gordon Chang writes that in Xi Jinping's conception of the world, there is no place for the United States or even the current international order.

Analyst Gordon G. Chang warns that Xi Jinping believes he must destroy America to accomplish his objectives. And that Xi already has a plan to do it. Xi reveres Mao and is marching China back to Maoism. He is reinstituting totalitarian social controls, demanding absolute political obedience from everyone, and cutting foreign links. Closing China off from the world is an essential element of his plan to save the communist system. His isolationism and xenophobia evoke policies from the earliest years of the People's Republic and during the two millennia of imperial rule. And Xi can't stop talking about war. More significantly, he is implementing the largest military buildup since the Second World War, he is trying to sanctions-proof the Chinese regime, he is stockpiling grain and other commodities, he is surveying America for strikes and sabotage, he is mobilizing China's civilians for battle, and he is purging China's military of officers opposed to going to war.

Transnational organized crime networks have taken advantage of America's porous borders and smuggled dangerous drugs into our nation. According to DEA, "Mexico and China are the primary source countries for fentanyl and fentanyl-related substances trafficked directly into the United States."

Fentanyl has taken the lives of 74,702 Americans in 2023 alone.

Authorities also noted that these individuals are linked to groups involved in migrant smuggling. Costa Rica’s Minister of Security, Mario Zamora, explained that the recent rise in migration has heightened alerts for individuals connected to terrorism. Other cases of individuals with links to terrorism, however, have been recorded. “Costa Rica has detained three individuals with international terrorism alerts: two Somalis linked to a little-known group and an Egyptian connected to Al Qaeda. Currently, we have a person from Kazakhstan, linked to ISIS, in custody. This migratory flow has brought individuals with a history of terrorism,” Zamora stated.

In 1973, Ben Carson graduated from Yale University. He went on to receive his M.D. from the University of Michigan Medical School. At the age of 33, Dr. Carson became the chief of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, making him the youngest major division director in the hospital’s history.

This would be among an extensive list of outstanding firsts for Dr. Carson. Dr. Carson’s accomplishments have earned him a place in medical history. He performed the first and only successful separation of craniopagus (Siamese) twins joined at the back of the head in 1987.

He also performed the first fully successful separation of type-2 vertical craniopagus twins in 1997 in South Africa. In his career, Dr. Carson became a professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery, and pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and directed pediatric neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center for over 29 years.

In 2016, Dr. Carson accepted the position of Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under the Trump administration. After completing his tenure as the 17th Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development in 2021, Dr. Carson founded the American Cornerstone Institute. This organization is focused on fighting for the principles that have guided him through life and that make this country great: faith, liberty, community and life.

Dr. Carson and his wife, Candy Carson, co-founded the Carson Scholars Fund, which recognizes young people of all backgrounds for exceptional academic and humanitarian accomplishments. The organization has awarded more than 11,000 scholarships and paid out more than $8.9 million in scholarships. The Carson Scholars Fund is currently operating in 50 states and the District of Columbia, and since its founding, has installed more than 270 Ben Carson Reading Rooms around the country.

In 2021, Dr. Carson founded the American Cornerstone Institute (ACI), a conservative think tank centered around advancing policies that promote “faith, liberty, community, and life.”

Dr. and Mrs. Carson reside in Florida. They are the proud parents of three sons and three daughters-in-law, and blessed grandparents of eight grandchildren.

As a self-described “Common Sense Jeffersonian Conservative,” Allen pushed through cutting edge reform with bipartisan support in a legislature held by the opposition.

Elected to the United States Senate in 2000, George Allen continued to advocate policies to make America and Virginia a leader in innovation and technology. Senator Allen was unanimously elected a member of the Senate Republican Leadership as chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee in 2002.

But if she has no position on natural rights, as she wrote in response to Senator Cruz, then she has no position on the Declaration of Independence. Her answers did not come under the pressured circumstances of live hearings, but instead came as written answers to written questions after the end of her Judiciary Committee hearings. We should view them not as a mistake, but as her carefully considered views on the matter. John Yoo is the Emanuel Heller Professor of Law at the University of California at Berkeley. He is also a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, and a Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University.

His tenth book, Defender-in-Chief: Trump’s Fight for Presidential Power, was published by St. Martin’s Press in 2020. Professor Yoo’s other books include Striking Power: How Cyber, Robots, and Space Weapons Change the Rules for War, Point of Attack: Preventive War, International Law, and Global Welfare, and Crisis and Command: A History of Executive Power from George Washington to George Bush.

Professor Yoo has published more than 100 articles in academic journals on subjects including national security, constitutional law, international law, and the Supreme Court. He also regularly contributes to the editorial pages of the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and National Review, among others.

Professor Yoo has served in all three branches of government. He was an official in the U.S. Department of Justice, where he worked on national security and terrorism issues after the 9/11 attacks. Fred Zeidman is the Co-Chair and Director of Council for a Secure America. He served as Chairman of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council and was appointed by President George W. Mr. Zeidman also is Chairman Emeritus of the University of Texas Health Science System Houston, interim Chief Financial Officer of the Texas Heart Institute and serves on the Board of the Institute for Rehabilitation and Research (TIRR). He further serves on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the University of Saint Thomas and Houston Community College.

Mr. Zeidman currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Petroflow Energy, and as a Director of Petro River Oil, Hyperdynamics Corp., Straight Path Communications, Inc. and Prosperity Bank in Houston. He was formerly Chairman of The Gordian Group, Chairman of the Board of SulphCo Inc., Chief Restructuring Officer of Transmeridian Exploration, Inc. and Bankruptcy Trustee of AremisSoft Corp. He has previously served as Chairman of the Board of Seitel Inc. and Unibar, Inc. Fred Zeidman serves on the board of the Republican Jewish Coalition and the Development Corporation of Israel (Israel Bonds), and served on the Board of the National World War II Museum.

Cleta Mitchell is the Senior Legal Fellow at CPI and chairs CPI’s Election Integrity Network. Cleta is an attorney, licensed in Oklahoma and the District of Columbia, who has practiced election, campaign finance, and political law for decades. Cleta graduated from the University of Oklahoma and the University of Oklahoma College of Law. She is one of the founders and is Chairman of the Public Interest Legal Foundation. Cleta has served as outside counsel to the NRCC, the NRSC, the National Rifle Association, and dozens of GOP members of the House and Senate, as well as many local and state Republican party committees. She represents numerous conservative organizations and was one of the key attorneys who fought back against the Obama IRS during the targeting of tea party groups. She was a volunteer attorney for the 2020 Trump legal team in Georgia. Cleta is admitted to practice before many federal district courts and the US Supreme Court.

Governor Phil Bryant served as Mississippi’s 64th governor from 2012 to 2020. The Customs and Border Protection recently reported: "Laredo Sector Border Patrol has encountered a dangerous trend of weapons being encountered during human smuggling events. Within 24 hours, three weapons were seized in three separate events involving human smuggling."

The conversation also highlights the importance of focusing on the science and real data from around the world when addressing the concerns about the coronavirus pandemic which originated in Wuhan, China. Dr. Carson brings to the table his experiences as a medical professional, a longtime Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, a position which he held since the age of 33.

Dr. Ben Carson presents ideas and solutions, emphasizing the guidelines provided by the administration and best practices outlined in order to safely reopen schools across America. Over 50 million students from K-12 grade have been impacted by the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic. While virtual education may help a certain group of students, these efforts may further marginalize the over 43% of children from lower income families lacking access to digital devices and the 15% of U.S. households with school-age children who do not have a high-speed internet connection at home. Schools insisting on virtual education are ignoring the digital divide. This may adversely affect low-income families and specifically children from the Black, Hispanic and rural areas.

— The Opportunity Zones incentive, created by the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, was designed to spur economic development and job creation by encouraging long-term investments in low-income communities nationwide. Nearly 35 million Americans live in the more than 8,700 Opportunity Zones across the country.

—The Secretary was just in Charleston, SC for an Opportunity Zone focused event with Senator Scott to discuss a new rule from the Treasury to drive more capital in underserved communities.

—273 action items have been completed by the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council as of the end of April. This list is available at OpportunityZones.gov. Each of these action items helps further the Council’s mission of complementing private Qualified Opportunity Fund investment.

—The rate of infection among younger schoolchildren and from students to teachers has been low, especially if proper precautions are followed. There have also been few reports of children being the primary source of COVID-19 transmission among family members. That’s where the data currently stands.
