<description>Join America's Roundtable (https://americasrt.com/) Radio co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy in a conversation with Peter M. Robinson, Murdoch Distinguished Policy Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Host of Uncommon Knowledge (https://www.hoover.org/publications/uncommon-knowledge)™ — Hoover's Video Series Program and Former Special Assistant and Speechwriter to President Ronald Reagan.
Peter Robinson is the Murdoch Distinguished Policy Fellow at the Hoover Institution, where he writes about business and politics, edits Hoover's quarterly journal, the Hoover Digest (https://www.hoover.org/publications/hoover-digest), and hosts Hoover's video series program, Uncommon Knowledge (https://www.hoover.org/publications/uncommon-knowledge)™.
Robinson spent six years in the White House, serving from 1982 to 1983 as chief speechwriter to Vice President George Bush and from 1983 to 1988 as special assistant and speechwriter to President Ronald Reagan. He wrote the historic Berlin Wall address in which President Reagan called on General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev to "tear down this wall!"
The conversation will begin by focusing on the 33rd anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. On November 9, 1989, five days after a major peaceful protest in East Berlin which gathered half a million people, the communist rulers gave permission for gates along the Berlin Wall to be opened. The fall of Communist Eastern Europe was hastened by the principled leadership of President Ronald Reagan joined by then-UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Pope John Paul II, Germany's Helmut Kohl, Vaclav Havel, leaders within Poland, and other countries in the Soviet block yearning for freedom.
The historic day reminded the world of a speech that was delivered on June 12, 1987 by President Ronald Reagan when he shared these words (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WX00QkvK-mQ&amp;amp;feature=youtu.be):
"_Behind me stands a wall that encircles the free sectors of this city, part of a vast system of barriers that divides the entire continent of Europe. . . . Standing before the Brandenburg Gate, every man is a German, separated from his fellow men. Every man is a Berliner, forced to look upon a scar. . . . As long as this gate is closed, as long as this scar of a wall is permitted to stand, it is not the German question alone that remains open, but the question of freedom for all mankind. . . .
General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate.
Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate!
Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!_"
—Ronald Reagan, address at the Brandenburg Gate, June 12, 1987
Topics covered on America's Roundtable (https://americasrt.com/):

<description>Join Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy, co-hosts of America's Roundtable for a conversation with Peggy Grande, executive assistant to President Ronald Reagan (1989-1999) and author of "The President Will See You Now". Grande, who started in the Office of Ronald Reagan as a college student and earned her way into a coveted role as the president’s Executive Assistant, offers an unparalleled perspective on the post-presidency of a political icon.
We discuss President Ronald Reagan's charachter, the significance of faith in his life and his principled leadership in addressing domestic and foreign policy issues. The conversation also highlights President Ronald Reagan's major legacies in hastening the fall of the Berlin Wall and the special friendship and relationship with Margaret Thatcher and the United Kingdom, respectively.
About the Book: https://peggygrande.com/book/
In The President Will See You Now, devoted Reagan insider Peggy Grande shares behind-the-scenes stories, intimate moments, and powerful insights into one of America’s most beloved presidents. Grande, who started in the Office of Ronald Reagan as a college student and earned her way into a coveted role as the president’s Executive Assistant, offers an unparalleled perspective on the post-presidency of a political icon.
Grande’s stories and never-before-seen photos show a unique, private side to a public figure and leader who reshaped conservatism, ushered in an era of prosperity, and helped spur the end of the Cold War. Grande reveals what day-to-day life was like in Reagan’s California office, including the former president’s relationship with the First Lady and his interactions with friends, world leaders, and everyday Americans.
Grande recounts Reagan’s vigorous schedule for years after he left the White House, his robust engagement with others, and ongoing political advocacy. Despite his eventual Alzheimer’s diagnosis, Grande shows how Ronald Reagan remained true to his core beliefs, his gentlemanly kindness, and his undying hope for his country.
Today the Reagan legacy looms over American politics more than ever. Grande reminds readers why: When Ronald Reagan was president, we not only loved ourselves but also loved America, and the American values he represented: faith, optimism, and patriotism.
